In a tragic turn of events, a shrimp farmer, Mohammad Hossain (56), lost his life in a dispute over a shrimp enclosure in the Chakria region of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Hossain, a resident of Chankhola village in Maheshkhali Upazila and a member of the Rampur Cooperative Agricultural Society, fell victim to armed criminals seeking control of a vast shrimp enclosure spanning 5,112 acres.
The incident unfolded in the early morning in the Rampur area of the Chakaria shrimp zone. According to Sheikh Mohammad Ali, the Officer-in-Charge of Chakaria Police Station, Hossain was shot when a group of armed individuals attempted to seize the shrimp enclosure. Local shrimp farmers revealed that the armed criminals resorted to gunfire to intimidate and force the members of the association residing in the enclosure to vacate the premises.
Shahidul Islam, the Director of Rampur Cooperative Agricultural Society, explained that the armed group had issued threats to the association members the night before, demanding they abandon the area. As Hossain resisted leaving, the criminals resorted to violence, ultimately leading to his tragic demise.
Rashida Begum, the deceased farmer’s wife, stated that her husband was shot dead while attempting to thwart the armed intruders from taking control of the shrimp enclosure.
The police are actively engaged in the process of identifying and apprehending the individuals responsible for the fatal shooting.
