Shrimp shells are often discarded as waste, but Professor Dr. Harry Agusnar of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has found a way to transform this overlooked resource into valuable chitosan compounds with numerous practical applications.
Decades of Dedication
Dr. Harry Agusnar embarked on his exploration of chitosan waste in 1987 during his master’s degree pursuit at the National University of Malaysia. While researching aromatic chemicals, he discovered the medicinal potential of chitosan for human use. His expertise in working with aromatic chemical compounds led to the development of innovative products, including hand body lotion, hand sanitizer, paper soap, and a revolutionary chitosan face serum with anti-aging properties.
From Skepticism to Success
Initially met with skepticism, Harry’s family soon became believers as they witnessed the impressive results of the researched products. The transformative power of shrimp shells surprised even those closest to him.
The Simple Art of Chitosan Production
According to Dr. Agusnar, the process of producing chitosan is surprisingly straightforward. Shrimp shells are deshelled and then either dried or soaked in alkaline water to eliminate any odor. Notably, the shells are not cooked or boiled, as these methods could damage the valuable compounds.
Positive Responses Amidst a Pandemic
Dr. Harry Agusnar’s products received positive responses during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially from university staff working offline. The Kitosan Hand Sanitizer and Chitosan Paper Soap became widely used, along with his breakthrough alcohol-free chitosan-based hand sanitizer.
Seeking a Wider Reach
Currently, Dr. Agusnar is eager to collaborate with a distribution company to make his innovative products available to the public. His vision extends beyond personal care items; he is working on a set of haircare products, including hair tonic, shampoo, and conditioner, all crafted from chitosan. Additionally, a chitosan fiber/yarn is in the pipeline.
A Hub of Scientific Creativity
Dr. Agusnar envisions that his products, proudly labeled with USU branding, will not only contribute to the public’s well-being but also position the university as a hub of scientific creativity. By offering accessible and affordable care products, he hopes to underscore USU’s contribution to industry and raise awareness of the university’s role in society.
