In light of ongoing challenges with anti-dumping and countervailing duties (CVD) in the United States, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia (KKP) is urging shrimp exporters to diversify their market presence. The government is actively working to resolve trade issues while simultaneously promoting alternative market access for Indonesian shrimp commodities in various regions.
Exploring Opportunities Beyond the United States
With a focus on expanding market reach, the KKP is targeting countries in Asia, Africa, and Europe for Indonesian shrimp exports. Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono emphasizes the significance of including non-traditional markets in the global shrimp trade. This strategy aims to reduce dependence on the US market and ensure the sustainability of Indonesia’s shrimp industry.
China Emerges as a Promising Alternative Market
Minister Trenggono identifies China as a key alternative market for Indonesian shrimp commodities. The Chinese shrimp market has witnessed substantial growth, experiencing a remarkable 49% annual increase over the last five years. In 2022, China’s shrimp market reached a staggering USD 6.3 billion, while Indonesia’s market share remains relatively modest at only 1.8%. The Ministry sees immense potential for Indonesian shrimp to thrive in the dynamic Chinese market.
Encouraging Collaboration and Innovation
In addition to diversifying geographical markets, Minister Trenggono stresses the importance of consolidation and active participation from various stakeholders, including farmers, suppliers, processors, and shrimp associations. This collective effort is aimed at boosting domestic market absorption and ensuring the sustainability of the industry.
Furthermore, the Ministry encourages ongoing innovation to meet evolving market needs. Minister Trenggono calls for collaboration with business actors, expressing satisfaction with the optimism demonstrated by the shrimp industry. He also advocates for the development of ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat shrimp products, aligning with current market trends and consumer preferences.
