In a historic decision, the Ukrainian Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food has granted permission to utilize the water area of the Dry Estuary in the Odessa region for the cultivation of shellfish and shrimp.
A Promising Economic Opportunity
Deputy Minister Vitaly Golovnya views mariculture as a promising avenue for the growth of the Ukrainian economy. The development of marine aquaculture is expected to provide the domestic market with high-quality, healthy, and affordable seafood options.
Drawing inspiration from leading nations in aquaculture, such as Norway and Chile, Ukraine aims to foster the growth of marine aquaculture in the Sukhyi Estuary. The country is extending an invitation to entrepreneurs to participate in electronic bidding for the rights to lease this water area.
Ideal Conditions for Cultivation
The selected section of the Sukhyi Estuary boasts free water exchange with the sea, ensuring optimal conditions for the cultivation of various types of shrimp and mussels. The water salinity levels are conducive to successful aquaculture operations.
Entrepreneurs interested in participating in this exciting opportunity will be able to enter into a lease agreement for a period of seven years. This duration accounts for the time required to generate revenue from aquaculture products, typically expected in the third year of economic activity. Entrepreneurs will also need to conduct preparatory work, including the placement of technological devices such as floating cages and collectors for shellfish.
The Ukrainian government is set to announce the first auction shortly, providing businesses with the opportunity to secure their lease on this promising water area.
