Vietnam stands as the world’s second-largest shrimp supplier, contributing significantly to the global shrimp export market. Among its provinces, three locales emerge as the key players in this lucrative industry: Ca Mau, Soc Trang, and Bac Lieu.
Ca Mau: Spearheading Shrimp Exportation
Ca Mau province has maintained a steady shrimp export turnover of USD 1 billion over the past three years. With an annual shrimp harvest exceeding 250,000 tons, the province’s export turnover soared to over USD 1.2 billion in both 2022 and 2023. Notably, Ca Mau shrimp products are distributed across 60 countries and territories, with major markets including the US, Japan, EU, and China. Looking ahead, Ca Mau aims to elevate its seafood export turnover to USD 1.65 billion by 2030, positioning its fisheries as a modern and sustainable economic force.
Soc Trang: Nurturing Growth in Shrimp Farming
In 2023, Soc Trang province witnessed a significant increase in its farmed shrimp output, surpassing 206,300 tons—an uptick of nearly 7.5% compared to the previous year. With seafood exports exceeding USD 1 billion for consecutive years, Soc Trang has set ambitious targets for 2024, planning to expand its brackish water shrimp farming to 50,320 hectares and achieve an output of 215,000 tons. To realize these goals, the province emphasizes collaboration among production teams and adheres to stringent production standards, including VietGAP, GlobalGAP, ASC, and BAP.
Bac Lieu: The Emerging Shrimp Capital
While Bac Lieu trails behind Ca Mau and Soc Trang in shrimp export turnover, the province has made remarkable strides in recent years. In 2023, Bac Lieu exceeded expectations by achieving a shrimp export turnover of USD 1 billion, marking a 17.21% increase over the previous period. With frozen shrimp accounting for over USD 973 million of this total, Bac Lieu is leveraging its 48 export seafood processing factories equipped with modern technology to meet international standards. The province sets its sights on further growth, targeting shrimp exports of USD 1.3 billion by 2025 and USD 1.7 billion by 2030.
