In a concerted effort to uphold the shrimp ban enforced until March 31 in Peru, the Regional Production Management, provincial sub-prefectures of Castilla and Camaná, along with the National Police of Peru, are actively coordinating surveillance and control measures.
Rigorous Enforcement on the Ground
Regional inspectors, supported by voluntary artisanal fishermen accredited by the Regional Production Management and in collaboration with leaders of the shrimp OSPAs (Social Organization of Artisanal Fishermen), are conducting surprise operations along the river basins of the Arequipa region. These operations have resulted in the confiscation of over 215 kilograms of shrimp and the identification of 10 individuals violating the ban by engaging in extractive activities related to river shrimp resources.
The shrimp ban is crucial for safeguarding the shrimp population by prohibiting capture, consumption, and commercialization during this period. By doing so, it facilitates reproduction and sustains the species. Compliance with this closed period is paramount for shrimp farming families as it ensures the continuity of the economic and productive chain throughout 2024.
Accessible Reporting Mechanism
To further support enforcement efforts, the Regional Production Management has established an exclusive hotline for the public to report any instances of non-compliance with the shrimp ban. This initiative aims to encourage community involvement in maintaining the integrity of the ban and protecting the shrimp population for future generations.
