In a move to bolster its shrimp industry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Oman has inked a pivotal agreement. This agreement aims to establish and oversee a National Veterinarian Quarantine exclusively dedicated to shrimp.
Strengthening Infrastructure
The Ministry’s agreement with the Oman Fisheries Development Company marks a milestone in the development of the shrimp sector. With an annual capacity projected at 16,000 pairs of reproducing shrimp, this initiative promises to fortify the shrimp farming infrastructure across various sites in the Sultanate.
Eng. Yaqoub bin Khalfan al-Busaidi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries for Fisheries, and Sheikh Nasser bin Sulaiman al-Harthy, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Oman Fisheries Development Company, signed the agreements. These agreements encompass the establishment of the National Veterinarian Quarantine and the allocation of a land plot through usufruct to facilitate the setup of the quarantine.
Quarantine Facilities
The National Veterinarian Quarantine, situated in the Wilayat of Barka, will feature state-of-the-art quarantine units. Each unit is designed to accommodate up to 750 shrimp, both male and female. The primary function of these units is to prepare the shrimps for transfer to designated breeding areas.
Affiliated with the Oman Investment Authority, the Oman Fisheries Development Company is a leading player in fisheries aquaculture investments. The company’s focus encompasses the development of various aspects of the fisheries sector, including shrimp breeding and fin fish projects.
