In a bid to solidify its position as a pivotal player in the shrimp farming industry, Bac Lieu province in southern Vietnam has set its sights on the adoption of high-tech shrimp farming models. With ambitions to emerge as the foremost shrimp farming hub in the nation, the province is embarking on a journey towards modernization within its aquaculture sector.
High-Tech Shrimp Farming Zones
Bac Lieu’s strategic plan involves the establishment of high-tech shrimp farming zones across key areas within the province. It has already initiated the development of five high-tech shrimp farming zones spanning an area of 3,900 hectares. These zones are strategically located in Bac Lieu city, as well as Hoa Binh and Dong Hai districts, laying the groundwork for a significant transformation within the local shrimp farming landscape.
Shrimp farming stands as a cornerstone of Bac Lieu’s economy, with the province boasting a diverse range of export products including shrimp, rice, and salt. However, it is shrimp that commands the lion’s share of the local export turnover, accounting for over 95% of the total.
Ambitious Export Targets
Underscoring its commitment to the expansion and enhancement of its shrimp farming sector, Bac Lieu has set ambitious export targets for the coming years. The province aims to achieve USD 1.3 billion in shrimp exports by the year 2025, with a further target of USD 1.7 billion by 2030.
In addition to its focus on modernizing shrimp farming practices, Bac Lieu has also made significant investments in processing infrastructure to support its burgeoning aquaculture industry. Presently, the province boasts 45 aquatic product processing plants dedicated to export, each equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and technology. Collectively, these processing facilities boast an installed processing capacity of approximately 294,000 tonnes per year.
