Thai Union has become the first Asian producer to attain an Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification for one of its feed plants.
Rigorous Audit Process
The Mahachai Plant, situated in Thailand’s Samut Sakhon province, has secured the prestigious ASC Feed Standard certification, marking a significant advancement in sustainable aquaculture practices in Asia.
Thai Union underwent an exhaustive audit process conducted over several months to meet the stringent requirements set by the ASC Feed Standard. The assessment concluded that the company’s practices and performance align with the robust environmental and social criteria outlined by the certification.
Incentive for Sustainability
Thai Union stands to benefit from an ASC incentive announced recently, exempting certified feed mills from license fees on compliant feed production for the calendar year 2024. This incentive aims to encourage more feed mills to adopt sustainable practices, furthering the industry’s sustainability agenda.
In addition to achieving ASC certification, Thai Union has launched the Shrimp Decarbonization initiative in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy and Ahold Delhaize USA. This innovative program aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the shrimp supply chain.
Leading the Way Towards a Sustainable Future
With a commitment to reducing GHG emissions by 42 percent within its operations and supply chain, the company is setting a high standard for environmental stewardship and responsible business practices.
