The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (Kufos) has strongly contested recent allegations made by the Chicago-based Corporate Accountability Lab against India’s shrimp industry. According to Kufos Vice-Chancellor T. Pradeepkumar, the accusations outlined in the report are largely unfounded and may have ulterior motives behind them.
Questioning the Report’s Accuracy
Dr. Pradeepkumar emphasized doubts regarding the factual accuracy of the report, stating, “If someone meticulously goes through the report, it can be seen that these accusations are mostly fabricated with some vested interests.” He further highlighted the long-standing involvement of the university in the shrimp processing and aquaculture industry, dating back to the 1970s.
Indian shrimp exports have been a significant contributor to the country’s economy, with frozen shrimp alone accounting for a substantial portion of seafood exports. The United States and China stand as the largest importers, underscoring the vital role of the Indian shrimp industry in international trade.
Challenges Faced by the Industry
Despite its prominence, the Indian shrimp industry has faced challenges, particularly in light of recent legislative actions in the United States targeting shrimp imports from various countries, including India. Dr. Pradeepkumar highlighted the adverse effects of such measures on the industry’s reputation and pricing dynamics.
In response to the allegations, Dr. Pradeepkumar reiterated the industry’s commitment to upholding international standards, including environmental conservation and labor rights. He emphasized the role of government support and scientific expertise in ensuring compliance with regulations and addressing industry challenges.
Call for Investigation and Collaboration
Acknowledging the importance of addressing concerns raised by the US group, Dr. Pradeepkumar urged the Government of India and the seafood sector to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations. Furthermore, Kufos pledged its support to government initiatives aimed at studying and improving the shrimp export sector.
Highlighting the university’s proactive approach, Dr. Pradeepkumar announced plans for a summit of stakeholders to discuss industry challenges and solutions. Additionally, Kufos intends to conduct training programs and fisheries improvement initiatives in collaboration with stakeholders to promote sustainability in the shrimp industry.
