Atarraya has introduced a novel approach to shrimp farming with its Shrimpbox technology. This Mexican company employs artificial intelligence to optimize environmental conditions within containers, resulting in an annual shrimp yield of 80 tons per Shrimpbox—57 times more than traditional aquaculture methods.
Expansion Plans
With 19 Shrimpboxes currently operational in Oaxaca, Naucalpan, and Indiana, Atarraya aims to expand its reach globally. The company is eyeing entry into markets such as Japan, with the goal of capturing 5% of the world’s most significant shrimp markets. This expansion aligns with projections indicating a substantial growth trajectory for the global shrimp market, estimated to reach USD 100.2 billion by 2032.
Atarraya’s Shrimpbox technology stands out for its environmental sustainability. Their approach aims to minimize environmental impact. By utilizing just 78 liters of water per kilo of shrimp, Atarraya sets a new standard for resource efficiency. Additionally, Shrimpboxes generate biofertilizer for agricultural use post-production.
Financial Growth
Since its establishment in 2020, Atarraya has experienced substantial growth fueled by strategic investments. In June 2022, the company secured a Series A investment of USD 3.9 million, followed by a Series A2 round of USD 7.5 million in April 2024. These investments have propelled Atarraya to an estimated valuation of USD 47 million.
