In 2023, processed shrimp emerged as the leading export commodity from North Kalimantan, Indonesia, showcasing substantial growth and market dominance. According to data from the Fish Quarantine Center for Quality Control (BKIPM) and Tarakan Fishery Product Safety, North Kalimantan exported 7,100 tons of processed shrimp products, valued at IDR 1 trillion (USD 62.05 million).
Key Markets and Export Trends
The majority of North Kalimantan’s processed shrimp exports in 2023 were directed towards Japan, accounting for 3,000 tons of shipments. Notably, the exported shrimp predominantly belonged to the tiger shrimp variety. Additionally, North Kalimantan’s processed shrimp found markets beyond Japan, including the United States, Hong Kong, Taiwan, France, Canada, South Korea, Australia, Switzerland, Vietnam, Italy, and Singapore.
The potential for processed shrimp exports from North Kalimantan continues to expand. In January 2024 alone, the region exported 600 tons of shrimp, amounting to IDR 91.4 billion (USD 5.67 million) in export value. Despite this growth, logistical challenges persist, with exports often transiting through Surabaya before reaching their final destination. However, direct sea routes to Malaysia remain viable for expedited shipments.
Diverse Export Portfolio
Beyond shrimp, North Kalimantan’s fishery products have attracted interest from several countries, reflecting a broader trend towards diversification within the region’s export market.
