The shrimp industry in Guyana is on the brink of a transformation with the development of a project in Onverwagt, Region Five.
Project Overview
The project at Onverwagt has a projected yield of 12 metric tons of Vannamei shrimp per crop. With each metric ton valued at approximately GYD 4 million (USD 19 thousand), the total seasonal yield is estimated at GYD 48 million (USD 230 thousand). Anticipating three reaping cycles annually, this venture promises economic growth and opportunities for the region.
President Irfaan Ali’s recent visit to the production site underscores the government’s commitment to the success of the project. With an investment of GYD 100 million (USD 478 thousand), the government recognizes the strategic importance of the shrimp industry in driving economic growth.
President Ali emphasized the government’s vision to replicate this model across the country, emphasizing a focus on export-oriented production. The initiative aligns with the 25 by 2025 agenda.
International Collaboration and Expertise:
Recognizing the need for specialized knowledge, the government has enlisted Indonesian experts to train local staff in prawn-rearing techniques. This international collaboration not only enhances local capacity but also fosters knowledge exchange to ensure sustainable and efficient shrimp production practices.
The project site spans 100 acres and comprises ten ponds, each capable of housing 600,000 shrimp in treated chlorine water. Currently, five ponds are operational, with plans to fill the remaining by the end of the second quarter.
Madanlall Ramraj, Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, provided insights into the progress of related facilities. The larvae facility is scheduled for completion by August, while the feed mill is slated to be operational by year-end.
