Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a major initiative to boost the state’s shrimp industry by directing USD 7.5 million from the state’s Job Growth Grant Fund. This investment aims to redevelop a shrimp dock near Fort Myers Beach, an area crucial to Florida’s seafood economy.
Revitalization of San Carlos Maritime Park
The redevelopment project will focus on the expansion and modernization of the facility at San Carlos Maritime Park. This facility, which suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Ian in 2022, is set to become a vital hub for both emergency operations and shrimp boat distribution. The enhanced infrastructure will ensure the facility is better equipped to handle future disasters and support the local shrimp industry.
During an appearance at a Home Depot in south Fort Myers, Governor DeSantis emphasized the economic and strategic importance of the redevelopment project. The plan includes the construction of a bulkhead for barge operations, port improvements, loading docks, and new mooring points. These enhancements are designed to improve the efficiency and capacity of shrimp distribution in the region, ensuring the industry’s sustainability and growth.
The Job Growth Grant Fund
The Job Growth Grant Fund, managed at the governor’s discretion, is dedicated to infrastructure and job-training projects that spur economic development. The USD 7.5 million allocated for the shrimp dock redevelopment is part of a broader effort to bolster the state’s economy and support vital industries. The proposed budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year includes USD 75 million for the fund.
