On June 4, the People’s Court of Kien Giang province in Vietnam held the first trial in a shocking case of violence over shrimp prices. Four defendants, Nguyen Thanh Tuan, Le Duc Thanh, Huynh Van Ho, and Nguyen Van Giang, were sentenced to a total of 28 years in prison for their involvement in an attack on a fellow shrimp seller.
Conflict Origin
The conflict began on December 28, 2022, when Tuan became angry that Nguyen Hong Luu was selling shrimp at a lower price than Tuan’s wife, Le Thi Tra My, at the Kinh 5 market. Upset that his wife’s shrimp sales were affected, Tuan decided to confront Luu.
Tuan, along with Thanh, Giang, and Ho, armed themselves and went to the market. Tuan attacked Luu with a knife, injuring him on the head. Luu fled, but Tuan further damaged Luu’s sales items. After the attack, Tuan hid the knife and fled.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
Mr. Luu was treated for his injuries, which were determined to cause a 30% impairment. The court sentenced Tuan to 9 years in prison, Thanh to 4 years, Giang to 7 years, and Ho to 8 years for attempted murder.
