The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) in India has successfully completed field trials of whiteleg shrimp. This marks a significant step towards popularizing this species among local farmers.
Technology Transfer to Farmers
As part of its initiative, KUFOS will transfer the whiteleg shrimp farming technology to approximately 30 selected farmers. This transfer of knowledge represents the first of its kind in the state. The University commenced trial farming of whiteleg shrimp in March after receiving permission from the Coastal Aquaculture Authority (CAA) in Chennai. Following the success of these trials in a brackish water ecosystem, KUFOS decided to expand its efforts.
Training Sessions
KUFOS will conduct a technology transfer session at its fisheries station in Puthuvype. Here, 30 farmers will be introduced to the procedures and best practices for farming whiteleg shrimp. The training will cover several essential topics, including:
- Precautions to be taken when releasing the exotic shrimp under local conditions
- Effective management practices
- Nutritional requirements and feed management
- Biology and lifecycle of the whiteleg shrimp
Regulatory Guidance
Additionally, farmers will receive guidance on necessary regulations and the assessment of conditions prior to starting farming. This will help ensure that farming practices meet the required standards and help mitigate potential risks.
KUFOS Vice-Chancellor Prof. B Madhusoodana Kurup will inaugurate the training program, with Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. K Padmakumar presiding over the function.
The university is also committed to assisting farmers in acquiring the necessary licenses, enabling them to commence farming by September or October this year.
