Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria has embarked on an initiative to bolster its marine sector with a dedicated ministerial portfolio, Marine and Blue Economy to harness its natural resources, particularly its vast marine potential.
Revitalizing Shrimp Boats for Nigeria
Joe Gazzier, a seasoned figure in the shrimp industry hailing from Bayou La Batre, Alabama, United States, is at the forefront of this transformative endeavor. Recognizing the opportunity to support Nigeria’s burgeoning shrimp fishing industry, Gazzier has facilitated the refurbishment and deployment of numerous shrimp boats from the Gulf Coast to West Africa.
Gazzier’s efforts extend beyond mere vessel transfer; each boat undergoes refurbishment to meet Nigerian standards. Working closely with Chuck Landry of CCL Enterprises in Houma, Louisiana, Gazzier ensures that the boats are equipped with state-of-the-art freezer systems. These upgrades are essential in maintaining shrimp quality during transportation and storage, vital for both domestic consumption and international export markets.
Rebuilding Engines for Efficiency
Central to the refurbishment process is the rebuilding of engines to enhance operational efficiency and reliability. Gazzier’s expertise ensures that each vessel is equipped with robust Caterpillar engines, essential for sustained operations in Nigeria’s expanding shrimp fisheries.
In addition to mechanical upgrades, Gazzier outfits each boat with advanced Furuno radar, sounders, and plotters. This technological integration ensures that Nigerian shrimp fishermen benefit from the same high standards of navigation and operational efficiency observed in the U.S., thereby facilitating safe and productive fishing expeditions.
Once refurbished, these shrimp boats embark on a journey spanning over 6,400 miles from the Gulf Coast to Lagos, Nigeria.
