DSM-Firmenich has launched a shrimp module for Sustell, a platform aimed at helping shrimp farmers map and reduce the environmental footprint of their operations to meet sustainability targets.
First LCA Platform for Shrimp Farming
The Sustell shrimp module is the first online life cycle assessment (LCA) platform tailored specifically for commercial shrimp farming. It provides environmental footprinting for all stages of shrimp production, from hatchery to growout, including a feed module, which is a key component in animal farming systems.
The new module was developed in collaboration with Grupo Almar, an Ecuadorian company and one of the top five global shrimp producers. Grupo Almar plans to implement this technology across its farms to enhance its sustainability practices.
Statements from Industry Leaders
Wolfgang Harten, General Manager/COO of Grupo Almar, noted the company’s goal of improving the environmental sustainability of its shrimp production through technology. He emphasized the importance of taking ownership of their full environmental footprint with the new module.
Louise Buttle, Sustell lead for Aqua & Global Key Account Manager at DSM-Firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, pointed out that the new module allows shrimp producers to conduct full lifecycle assessments at scale. This can lead to improved farm productivity, ecolabeling, and sustainable finance.
