Declining Shrimp Prices Impact Vietnam’s Hi-Tech Farming Efforts

Published on

In Ben Tre, Vietnam, farmers are contending with economic challenges. Despite substantial investments in hi-tech farming methods, a notable decline in shrimp prices has presented hurdles to profitability. This downturn has particularly affected farmers who have transitioned to advanced farming techniques.

Current Market Prices

Current market prices stand at VND 70,000 (USD 2.76) per kg for smaller shrimp and VND 115,000 (USD 4.53) for larger ones, marking a significant decrease from prices just two months ago.

Local traders attribute the price drop to reduced market demand. This decline has posed difficulties for farmers who have invested heavily in hi-tech farming methods aimed at improving productivity and product quality.

Advantages of Hi-Tech Farming

Despite these challenges, hi-tech farming has brought substantial benefits to shrimp cultivation in Ben Tre. These methods have reduced farmers’ vulnerability to weather fluctuations and enabled more precise breeding cycles.

Ben Tre sees potential in expanding brackish water hi-tech shrimp farming. Districts like Ba Tri, Binh Dai, and Thanh Phu have transitioned to sophisticated multi-stage systems, minimizing disease risks, increasing productivity, improving quality, and potentially yielding profits of up to VND 800 million (USD 31,480) per batch.

Future Directions

The province is committed to expanding its hi-tech shrimp farming areas, having added 320 hectares since the beginning of the year with plans to reach 500 hectares by 2024. Ben Tre aims to support farmers and foster investments that enhance shrimp and seafood production.
