Aldi, the popular supermarket chain, has initiated a recall of a specific batch of frozen tropical shrimp in France. The recall comes after concerns of contamination with vibrio vulnificus, a bacteria known for its harmful effects on human health.
Nature of the Contamination
Vibrio vulnificus, often referred to as a “flesh-eating” bacteria, poses significant health risks, particularly when consumed through raw or undercooked shellfish. According to reports, the affected batch of shrimp distributed under the Golden Seafood brand is deemed unsafe for consumption due to this contamination.
The bacteria, commonly found in warm, salty waters, can lead to severe illness in humans, including potentially fatal outcomes. Health authorities in the United States report a mortality rate of approximately 33% associated with infections from vibrio vulnificus.
Recall History and Precedent
This incident is not an isolated case. Previously, in December 2023, another supermarket chain in France, U stores, recalled a batch of frozen prawns due to similar contamination concerns. Consumers who have purchased the affected product are urged to return it to Aldi stores for a full refund.
