The Innu Nation in Canada has increased its presence in the fishery industry in Newfoundland and Labrador with the acquisition of the Harbour Grace Shrimp Company. The deal, which was made through the Nation’s fishing company arm, has granted them access to the offshore shrimp fishery through one of 17 offshore licenses.
Increased Access to Valuable Species
The acquisition also provides the Innu Nation with greater access to other valuable species, including Greenland halibut, Atlantic halibut, northern cod, yellowtail, and redfish. The Nation has long advocated for fair access to adjacent fish resources, and this move will allow them to become key players in the offshore fishery.
According to Gregory Rich, CEO of the Labrador Innu Fishing Company, the acquisition will bring long-term benefits to the two communities served by the Innu Nation.
Additional Quota and Allocation
The Innu company will now have access to over 200 metric tons of additional turbot quota, as well as additional halibut and an offshore shrimp allocation. This increased access will enable the company to expand its operations and provide more opportunities for employment and economic growth in the region.
