In July 2023, Roy van Daatselaar, Head of the ASC Improver Programme, showcased the Improver Programme at the Bangladesh International Aquaculture & Seafood Show (BIASS). This initiative supports shrimp farms aspiring to improve their practices and achieve certification. In September 2023, ASC launched its first Aquaculture Improvement Project (AIP) with LENK Frozen Foods and Luna Shrimp Farms, engaging 125 farmers across five clusters and producing up to 400 kilograms of shrimp per hectare annually.
Showcasing Local Farmers
The expo featured a short film highlighting local farmers from the Satkhira region, who shared how the AIP training has transformed their practices, benefitting both the environment and the local economy. Van Daatselaar and Heiko Lenk, Managing Director of LENK Frozen Foods, visited farmers to discuss progress and the program’s community benefits.
Bangladesh’s aquaculture predominantly focuses on black tiger shrimp, or “bagda.” ASC aims to support the establishment of a premium brand for this traditional shrimp variety. The AIP helps farmers improve practices and aims for better pricing and market access, fostering shared value across the supply chain.
Empowering Shrimp Farming Communities
The AIP benefits entire communities by improving access to essential services. Heiko Lenk emphasized the importance of community engagement, with recent efforts including school renovations, teacher training, and infrastructure improvements. Future plans also involve mangrove reforestation.
