Bac Lieu province in Vietnam has set its sights on becoming a major player in the global shrimp industry. With a strong focus on shrimp production, this region is determined to increase its export turnover significantly over the next few years.
Shrimp: The Main Export Product
Bac Lieu province primarily relies on three key export products: shrimp, rice, and salt. Among these, shrimp stands out as the dominant contributor, accounting for over 95% of the province’s export turnover. The province has set a target of reaching USD 1.3 billion in shrimp exports by 2025 and an even more ambitious goal of USD 1.7 billion by 2030.
Bac Lieu currently boasts 48 export seafood processing factories equipped with modern machinery, collectively capable of processing approximately 294,000 tons of shrimp annually. These processing facilities adhere to stringent quality standards, enabling Bac Lieu to tap into demanding markets worldwide, including the United States, Japan, European Union, China, Korea, and many others.
Viet Uc Seafood Processing Factory
In 2023, the completion and initial operation of the Viet Uc Seafood Processing Factory marked another milestone for Bac Lieu. This facility successfully exported 46 tons of shrimp to the Korean market and is actively pursuing additional orders to continue its growth.
The Vietnamese government has designated Bac Lieu province as the future capital of the shrimp industry. In line with this, the province has been diligently working to create an environment conducive to the development of high-tech shrimp farming models, particularly in designated areas with an emphasis on advanced technologies, closed systems, water circulation, and environmental sustainability.
A Vision for the Future
Bac Lieu aims to swiftly establish itself as the premier center for the shrimp industry in Vietnam. The province is committed to building the “Bac Lieu clean shrimp” brand and enhancing the value chain within the Bac Lieu shrimp industry. High-tech shrimp farming models are set to be the focal point of development, with support for smallholder farmers to adopt these cutting-edge practices.
Bac Lieu province is also dedicated to facilitating businesses in adopting information technology and embracing digital transformation within their trade promotion activities. Encouraging businesses to register product brands and promote them as part of the Bac Lieu shrimp brand-building effort is another critical aspect of their strategy.
