A group of fishermen from Rio Grande, Brazil, staged a demonstration at the City Hall, calling upon the federal government to provide answers regarding promised aid. This demand stems from assurances made by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, André de Paula, during his visit to the region on November 6, 2023.

Fishing Challenges Amidst Economic Hardship

Since October of the preceding year, artisanal fishermen have encountered numerous obstacles in their livelihoods. Difficulties in fishing for croakers in the Lagoa dos Patos Estuary and a lack of shrimp catches since the opening of the shrimp harvest on February 1st have exacerbated their plight. Moreover, adverse weather conditions, including storms, have further impeded their fishing activities.

The visit of Minister André de Paula to Rio Grande and Pelotas at the end of the previous year raised hopes among the artisanal fishermen. However, their requests, such as an extension of the closed season insurance period, were not met. Despite the minister’s assurance of expediting aid transfer, the promised assistance remains elusive.

Seeking Support and Accountability

Feeling the weight of their precarious situation, the fishermen have turned to their local representatives for support. They emphasize the urgency of their needs, citing instances of fishermen facing electricity disconnections due to financial constraints. The support of councilors and federal deputies is deemed crucial in holding the federal government accountable for its commitments.

In response to inquiries, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has offered no updates on the situation, leaving the fishermen in a state of uncertainty. However, efforts are underway from some federal deputies, like Alexandre Lindenmeyer, who has pledged to engage with the Civil House to address the pressing issue.
