In 2023, Brazil’s shrimp production reached 127.5 thousand metric tons—an increase of 13% from the previous year. This robust growth is part of a broader trend in aquaculture, as highlighted by the recent Municipal Livestock Survey (PPM) conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
Aquaculture Landscape
Overall fish production in Brazil amounted to 655.3 thousand metric tons, reflecting a 5.8% increase in 2023. The total production value of fish reached BRL 6.7 billion (USD 1.2 million), marking a growth of 16.8% year-on-year.
While shrimp farming shines, tilapia remains the cornerstone of Brazil’s aquaculture, representing 67.5% of total fish production. With 442.2 million kilos harvested in 2023, tilapia continues to hold its status as the dominant species, benefiting from Brazil’s favorable climate and abundant water resources.
Regional Highlights
The municipalities of Morada Nova de Minas, Nova Aurora, Jatobá, Palotina, and Assis Chateaubriand are notable contributors to Brazil’s fish production. Together, these areas account for 12.8% of the national output, showcasing the regional diversity and specialization within the aquaculture sector.
