In the Southeast and South regions of Brazil, the shrimp season is set to close on January 28th, lasting until April 30th. This temporary halt in shrimp fishing aims to safeguard the crucial phases of reproduction and growth, ensuring the sustainability of the industry and preventing the risk of extinction.
Exceptions for White Shrimp
While the closed season restricts the harvest of several shrimp species, fishing for white shrimp is permitted during this period. However, a crucial condition applies – the use of trawling with motorized traction is strictly prohibited. This exception provides a delicate balance, allowing for some level of economic activity while still prioritizing the protection of the shrimp population.
Landing Period and Declarations
Fishermen are reminded that the landing of shrimp species is allowed until January 30th. However, compliance with regulations does not end with the landing; those involved in storing, transporting, processing, and selling shrimp must declare the weight of their stock. This declaration must be made by the 5th working day of the closed season, which falls on February 6, 2024.
