A research team from Shanghai Ocean University, China, recently concluded a productive visit to Cambodia focused on advancing rice-fish and rice-shrimp farming techniques. This visit aligns with efforts to establish the Fish and Rice Corridor aimed at enhancing bilateral agri-trade volume and strengthening collaboration in the agricultural sector.
Investigative and Training Visit
From April 21 to 27, the research team engaged in comprehensive investigations and conducted training sessions across various regions of Cambodia. The objective was to better understand local conditions and equip farmers with enhanced skills for rice-fish farming.
This initiative builds upon a previous project undertaken from 2021 to 2023, which focused on technical cooperation for rice-fish farming and poverty alleviation through aquaculture in the Lancang-Mekong River region. The renewed project, now expanded to include local talent cultivation, underscores a commitment to sustainable development and capacity-building.
Partnerships and Training Initiatives
Collaborating with Cambodian counterparts led by Thay Somony, Director of the Department of Aquaculture Development at the Fishery Administration of Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, the Shanghai Ocean University team visited rice-shrimp farming demonstration bases in Takeo province. They also conducted training sessions benefiting over 30 farmers directly on-site.
Recognizing the critical role of local talent in Cambodia’s agricultural development, the research team actively engaged with high school students during their visit, aiming to attract more individuals to the field of rice-fish farming. This educational outreach is crucial for fostering sustainable industrial growth in the region.
