The red shrimp harvest in Chubut province, Argentina, has kicked off with a promising start, as reported by the Argentine National Ministry of Fisheries. In December 2023, a substantial 30,300 tons of shrimp were successfully brought to Rawson, the capital of Chubut province, marking a positive beginning to the season. Fishermen, drawing on years of experience, note that December and January typically yield the best production records for red shrimp.
The previous red shrimp fishing season concluded in March 2023, and the current season has approximately three months remaining. Should fishing levels remain stable, Chubut province is poised to surpass the previous season’s output of 90,000 tons, potentially setting a new record.
December is a crucial period for Argentine red shrimp fishing vessels, operating at maximum capacity. However, adverse weather conditions, the Christmas holiday, and conflicts related to loading and unloading facilities led to some vessels suspending operations temporarily. As of January 2, 2024, shrimp fishing vessels have resumed activities. The Chubut provincial government has announced plans for relevant parties to convene this month to address conflicts between loading and unloading companies at the port.
Despite challenges, Argentinian fishermen express optimism, supported by positive biological indicators suggesting that natural red shrimp resources are in good condition. While the industry anticipates an abundant supply of raw materials and increased activity for fishing vessels, the international market demand for red shrimp has not experienced significant growth over the past year, and selling prices have remained stagnant.
