The Public Prosecution of Bahrain has ordered the detention of a man for trading shrimp during the ban season. The Coast Guard apprehended the individual, discovering eight refrigerators filled with fresh shrimp, totaling approximately 300 kilograms.
Investigation and Findings
Following the arrest, the defendant was swiftly referred to the Public Prosecution. Detailed police investigations uncovered that three boats were utilized to catch the shrimp. These boats were found to belong to another individual, indicating a broader network of involvement.
A marine inspector conducted an examination of the shrimp and verified that they were captured using bottom trawling nets, known locally as “karaf.” This method of fishing is explicitly banned during the closed season to protect marine ecosystems and ensure sustainable shrimp populations.
Legal Actions and Charges
The suspect was thoroughly questioned, and his pretrial detention was ordered. He faces charges of trading and selling shrimp during the prohibited season, a serious offense under local regulations.
As the investigation progresses, the Public Prosecution has taken further steps, including the confiscation of the vehicle involved in the incident. The seized shrimp are to be sold at a public auction, with the proceeds directed to the Public Prosecution’s treasury, underscoring the legal and financial repercussions of the offense.
