The Philippines is determined to establish its presence in the agricultural sector, particularly in the realm of high-quality seafood production. Leading the charge in this endeavor is DATAJ Aquafarm Inc., a company based in Cagayan, established in 2009, with a clear vision of becoming synonymous with top-tier aquaculture.
Shifting Focus to Vannamei Shrimp
Initially, DATAJ Aquafarm started its journey as a fin fish producer. However, the company’s pivotal moment came when it decided to venture into the cultivation of Vannamei shrimp. According to Chief Operation Officer Cynthia P. Tamayo, this particular variety of shrimp has garnered popularity and profitability for several reasons.
Vannamei shrimp is prized for its resilience to diseases, adaptability to the tropical climate of the Philippines, and ease of harvest and transportation. This strategic shift allowed DATAJ to carve a niche for itself in the aquaculture industry.
A Dual Purpose and a Disciplined Approach
As the aquaculture arm of the DDT Group, led by Engr. Danilo D. Tamayo, and DDT Konstract Inc. (DDTKI), DATAJ Aquafarm operates with a dual purpose. On a personal level, Engr. Tamayo aims to contribute to the economic growth of his hometown in Buguey, Cagayan, by creating jobs and trade opportunities. On a business level, his engineering background informs a disciplined approach to aquafarming.
DATAJ integrates cutting-edge technologies and constructs state-of-the-art facilities to ensure consistent world-class shrimp production. This commitment to excellence is underpinned by certifications such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) from the FDA, a Certificate of Approval from the DA, and HACCP certification.
State-of-the-Art Operations
With operations spanning 129 hectares, including farms in Calamegatan, Buguey, and Caniugan and Centro East in Sta. Teresita municipality, where the processing plant is located, DATAJ Aquafarm stands out as one of the most technologically advanced aquaculture facilities in the Philippines. The company has a daily output of 22 tons of live, fresh, and processed shrimp.
Expanding Horizons
DATAJ’s ambitions extend beyond the Philippines. The company is poised for further expansion, targeting local markets in Metro Manila, Palawan, and the Visayas. Simultaneously, DATAJ is exploring opportunities in the United States and the Middle East, aiming to establish a global presence as a reliable seafood supplier.
