The fishing industry in the Rivière-au-Renard community in Canada and surrounding businesses in La Côte-de-Gaspé region of Quebec has been grappling with a significant decline in shrimp and turbot resources. In response, the Government of Canada, through Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED), has stepped in to provide financial assistance of CAD 403,018. This non-repayable contribution is aimed at alleviating the challenges faced by the local community.
Supporting Economic Diversification and Growth
Honourable Soraya Martinez Ferrada, Minister of Tourism and Minister responsible for CED, announced this support to the Municipalité régionale de comté (MRC) de La Côte-de-Gaspé.
The MRC de La Côte-de-Gaspé encompasses five municipalities and plays a vital role in facilitating regional decisions and providing essential support for cultural, economic, rural, and social development. With CED’s support, the MRC will mobilize various stakeholders to assist affected businesses. This collaborative effort will offer customized consulting services to fishers and processing plants in Quebec facing the decline in shrimp and turbot catches, with a particular focus on the Rivière-au-Renard sector. Development and diversification strategies will be established, helping the local economy regain its footing.
Building a Sustainable, Inclusive Economy
The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of businesses and organizations that serve as pillars of their communities. These entities are vital for Quebec’s economic growth and contribute significantly to building a sustainable, inclusive economy.
The financial assistance provided by CED falls under the Quebec Economic Development Program, which aims to empower communities to seize promising economic development and diversification opportunities. In Quebec, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a crucial role, accounting for 99.7% of the province’s businesses and 50% of its GDP.
Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED) is at the forefront of supporting regional economic development in Quebec. With its 12 regional business offices, CED is committed to assisting businesses, supporting organizations, and all regions in Quebec as they navigate the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow’s economy.
