Honduras and China are steadily advancing their Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, aiming to solidify a mutually beneficial relationship. Helui Castillo, the commercial policy manager of the Honduran Council of Private Enterprise (COHEP), reported that the negotiations are progressing smoothly and are expected to conclude within a year.
Upcoming Negotiation Round in Beijing
The next round of negotiations is scheduled to take place in Beijing in July. Key topics such as rules of origin and market access will be on the agenda, crucial elements for finalizing the agreement. These discussions are vital for ensuring that the terms of the FTA will foster enhanced trade relations between the two nations.
Castillo emphasized the significance of finalizing the FTA with China, noting that as a global economic powerhouse, China’s market offers substantial benefits to Honduras. “China is already our second partner in terms of imports. It is crucial to see how we can take advantage of this relationship to strengthen our productive sectors,” he stated.
Showcasing Honduran Shrimp in China
In recent developments, more than 120 kilos of Honduran shrimp are set to be exported to China, marking a significant event at a fisheries and seafood fair where Honduras will be the guest of honor. Nancy Lara, the general director of International Promotion of the Foreign Ministry, highlighted the importance of this opportunity for Honduras to showcase its high-quality shrimp to the Chinese market.
“We hope to be able to exhibit Honduran shrimp and differentiate it as a high-quality product; in fact, Honduras is the guest of honor at this fair,” Lara stated. This exposure is expected to enhance the visibility and reputation of Honduran shrimp, paving the way for increased trade and stronger economic ties.
Strategic Partnership for Growth
The ongoing negotiations and the upcoming seafood fair highlight the strategic importance of the FTA for Honduras. By leveraging the large Chinese market, Honduras aims to boost its shrimp exports and strengthen its economic position. Concluding the FTA with China represents a significant step towards achieving these goals and fostering long-term growth in the shrimp industry.
