The export of high-quality white shrimp from Honduras to China signals a pivotal moment in the deepening relationship between the two nations. Salvador Enrique Moncada, the Honduran Ambassador to China, hailed this development as a testament to the growing economic cooperation that has benefited both countries. The shipment of shrimp is symbolic not only of trade but also of the diplomatic milestones achieved since formal ties were established in 2023.
Diplomatic Ties Strengthened by Trade
Honduras’ decision to establish diplomatic relations with China in March 2023 has already borne fruit. Within a short span, the two nations finalized a substantial agreement that allowed for the early export of key Honduran products to China under a free trade arrangement, effective from September 1. The ambassador emphasized that the decision to engage with China diplomatically and economically has proven correct, as the arrival of Honduran white shrimp in China is only the first of many expected ventures.
By September, the first batch of white shrimp entered China through the port of Tianjin. The product enjoyed the benefits of zero tariffs and swift customs clearance, signaling the efficiency of the new trade arrangement. A successful trial sale in Beijing further cemented the shrimp’s popularity, paving the way for its official introduction to the Chinese market.
Expanding Horizons Beyond Shrimp
While white shrimp is a signature Honduran export, the country aims to broaden its trade portfolio. Ambassador Moncada highlighted future plans to introduce other Honduran goods such as coffee, tobacco, and fruits to China, reflecting the immense commercial potential in the world’s second-largest economy.
Moncada sees especially great promise for Honduran coffee. As China’s coffee market continues to mature, Honduras is positioning itself to become a key supplier. The ambassador’s optimism extends beyond individual products, foreseeing a steady increase in trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
In 2023, trade volume between China and Honduras reached USD 1.91 billion, marking a 21.1% year-on-year growth, according to China’s General Administration of Customs. This upward trajectory underscores the increasing importance of economic ties for both nations.
A Strategic Partnership for Global Growth
The ambassador also expressed confidence in China’s economic trajectory, noting its importance for the Global South. He remarked that China’s economic strength offers an encouraging model for developing countries like Honduras. Moncada commended China’s success in lifting millions out of poverty, adding that Honduras could learn from some of China’s policies as it seeks to develop further, although without replicating them exactly.
The signing of a cooperation agreement under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2023 is expected to deepen ties further. Moncada believes that the BRI will play a key role in supporting Honduras’ green energy transformation, with potential investments in hydropower and solar power. By leveraging China’s experience in sustainable development, Honduras hopes to chart its own path towards a greener future.
