In India, the ICAR-Central Institute of Brakishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA), based in Chennai, has forged a strategic alliance under the Make in India program. The collaboration, focused on consultancy services for the formulation, processing, and production of indigenous shrimp and fish feeds, marks a pivotal step in promoting self-sufficiency in the aquaculture industry.
MoU Signing with Sri Krushna Feeds
The partnership takes shape with Sri Krushna Feeds, based in Odisha, joining hands with ICAR-CIBA. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two entities is poised to bring about transformative changes in the aquafeed landscape.
Enhancing Economic Benefits and Sustainability
Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Lal, the Director of CIBA, expressed confidence in the collaborative effort, emphasizing its potential to enhance economic benefits, foster innovation, and contribute to the overall growth, sustainability, and competitiveness of the aquafeed sector in the long run.
Addressing Challenges in Odisha’s Aquafeed Sector
Currently, fish feeds used in Odisha predominantly come from corporate feed mills with technological support from multinational firms and foreign consultants. However, these feeds are often costlier, posing a challenge for small and marginal farmers in terms of regular availability. The collaborative efforts between ICAR-CIBA and Sri Krushna Feeds aim to address these challenges by promoting the production of CIBA shrimp and fish feeds, branded as the plus series, providing a viable and cost-effective alternative for local farmers.
