India is setting its sights on expanding its seafood exports to approximately USD 12 billion within the next two years. This ambitious target, announced by government officials, aims to capitalize on high-end markets, particularly in the United States and Europe.
Dominance in Shrimp Exports to the United States
With its focus on value addition and supply to high-end markets, India has cemented its position as the largest supplier of seafood, notably frozen shrimps, to the United States. In the fiscal year 2022/23, Indian shrimp exports to the U.S. reached USD 2.6 billion, marking a significant increase over the past eight years.
Shrimp farming has emerged as a significant opportunity for approximately 200,000 workers, particularly women, predominantly in the Southern states of Andhra Pradesh. However, despite the growth prospects, concerns loom over the potential weakness in global demand for the fiscal year.
Diversified Market Reach
Apart from the United States, India’s frozen shrimp products have garnered substantial demand in other regions such as China, the European Union, South East Asia, Japan, and Middle Eastern countries. Additionally, various other seafood products like frozen fish, octopus, and cuttlefish are also witnessing significant traction in international markets.
Responding to allegations of exploitative labor practices within the shrimp export industry, Indian officials dismissed the claims as “baseless.” They suggested that such allegations might stem from trade rivalries with other countries and the U.S. industry. The government, in collaboration with seafood exporters and state authorities, aims to ensure compliance with labor and environmental standards to meet the expectations of international buyers.
Assurance of Quality and Safety Standards
The Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO), representing top exporters, has reiterated its commitment to complying with food safety and quality norms to meet the stringent requirements of importing nations, including the United States. To assuage any concerns among buyers, the government is considering the possibility of conducting an independent study on working conditions within the industry.
