A new regulatory framework agreement has been forged between Indonesia and the United States. This agreement, facilitated by the Marine Affairs and Fishery Ministry, aims to enhance the quality assurance of fishery products, particularly focusing on shrimp exports to the American market.
Embracing Whole-Genome Sequencing (WGS)
Key to this agreement is the adoption of “whole-genome sequencing” (WGS) technology. According to Ishartini, the director general of the ministry’s quality assurance agency, WGS has revolutionized food-borne disease surveillance. By implementing WGS platforms in laboratory testing, Indonesia aims to ensure the safety and quality of its shrimp exports, aligning with international standards.
Following in the footsteps of India and Ecuador, Indonesia recognizes the strategic importance of WGS in gaining easier access to the American market. Ishartini emphasized the consequences of non-compliance with this scheme, warning of potential strict border measures if Indonesian shrimp fails to meet the agreed-upon standards.
Partnership and Technical Assistance
To bolster its capabilities in WGS-based food safety surveillance, Indonesia has partnered with prestigious institutions like the University of Maryland Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA). This collaboration is set to facilitate knowledge transfer and technological advancements in shrimp aquaculture areas.
In parallel with these advancements, Indonesia has launched a groundbreaking shrimp cultivation project in Kebumen, Central Java. Spanning 100 hectares, this project represents Indonesia’s first modern shrimp pond modeling initiative. It includes 149 pond plots equipped with essential infrastructure such as water intakes, reservoirs, and wastewater treatment plants.
The project also features dedicated facilities including a water quality testing laboratory, production warehouses, and accommodations for operators. This comprehensive approach underscores Indonesia’s commitment to advancing its shrimp industry through innovation and sustainable practices.
