The Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District in the United States is currently in the process of finalizing a transaction to acquire waterfront property on San Carlos Island for the purpose of constructing a new administrative headquarters and training facility. The pending deal, valued at USD 3.4 million, has received approval from the Fort Myers Beach Board of Fire Commissioners, contingent upon the demolition of an existing building on the property located at 1101 Shrimp Boat Lane.
Forward Momentum
Fire Chief Scott Wirth has confirmed that the district is presently under contract for the property purchase, with expectations of completing the transaction within the next 30 to 45 days. This acquisition aims to centralize the fire district’s administrative operations, which are currently dispersed across San Carlos Boulevard and Voorhis St., into a single, consolidated location.
The 1.75-acre parcel earmarked for development is situated adjacent to Erickson & Jensen Seafood, formerly utilized for shrimp boat dockage until Hurricane Ian caused substantial damage. Grant Erickson, owner of the seafood establishment, has expressed optimism regarding potential collaboration with the fire district to restore the docks, emphasizing their importance to the local shrimping industry.
Community Collaboration
During discussions among fire commissioners, there has been a demonstrated willingness to engage with local stakeholders, including Erickson and the shrimp fleet, in exploring opportunities for collaboration. The board has acknowledged the economic significance of revitalizing the shrimp boat dockage and has indicated its support for such initiatives.
While specific plans for the utilization of the acquired property are still being developed, Chief Wirth has indicated that considerations for potential dockage use include accommodating a fire boat, which may impact space availability for shrimp boats. Additionally, discussions regarding the development of a training tower and administrative facilities are pending, with designs slated to commence post-acquisition.
Transition Strategy
As the district proceeds with its expansion plans, Chief Wirth has suggested the likelihood of selling the current administration building on Voorhis St., although a final decision has yet to be made. The transition to the new facilities represents a significant step forward for the Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District, aiming to enhance operational efficiency and service delivery capabilities.
