Kaua’i Shrimp in Hawaii, USA, has been acquired by Oahu-based Aloun Farms. The acquisition will bring the state’s largest aquaculture farm under local ownership, preserving the 31 jobs at the Kekaha facility and allowing for the expansion of its operations.
Local Roots Run Deep
Kaua’i Shrimp, which produces over half a million pounds of Pacific white leg shrimp annually, will continue to operate on its 238-acre farm on the West Side of Kaua’i. The shrimp are harvested, processed, and packaged locally, ensuring that the freshest product reaches consumers.
Grant Kunishima, general manager of Kaua’i Shrimp, emphasized the company’s commitment to the local community, highlighting its ongoing donations of fresh produce to food banks and other organizations.
A Family Legacy
Aloun Farms, founded in 1977 by Aloun Sou, has long been dedicated to reducing Hawaii’s dependence on imported food. The family-owned business cultivates over 2,500 acres on Oahu and Kaua’i, supplying the state’s largest wholesalers and retail outlets. Alec Sou, president and CEO of Aloun Farms, echoed his father’s commitment to local food production, welcoming Kaua’i Shrimp into the family business.
The acquisition is expected to close on October 1, 2024, subject to approval from lessors. Aloun Farms plans to expand Kaua’i Shrimp’s unused land with other aquaculture species, diversifying its offerings across the islands. This move is set to boost the local shrimp industry, providing new opportunities for growth and development.
