In Mexico, Baja California’s marine species is driving demand from Japan, with the state government and local businesses capitalizing on this trend. Recently, the Secretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Baja California, Dr. Alma Rosa García Juárez, led a delegation to the Toyosu fish and seafood auction market in Tokyo, one of the largest in the world.
Exploring Export Opportunities
During the visit, representatives from Baja California’s shrimp industry, including Atenea en el Mar and Baja Marine Foods, discussed business opportunities with Japanese companies. These companies are interested in acquiring various seafood products, including hake, sardines, clams, mackerel, and squid. Tokio Seafoods LTD, which currently imports brown shrimp from Guaymas, Sonora, also participated in the meetings.
The Toichi company, led by Toji Yamazaki, hosted an exchange on the marketing of hotate, or Japanese scallop. This is a growing opportunity for Baja California shrimp producers to explore new markets and increase their competitiveness in the global agri-food market.
