The 2024 Shrimp Season has begun on the Mississippi Sound, United States, with a focus on quality rather than quantity. This year, shrimpers are optimistic about the potential for a successful season, even with fewer boats out on the water compared to previous years.
Fleet of 46 Boats Sets Sail
As the season commenced, a fleet of 46 boats ventured into the Mississippi Sound. Despite the modest number of vessels, those who cast their nets reported finding decent-sized shrimp, promising a good start for the local industry.
“We saw about 46 boats from the preliminary estimates,” noted Jason Saucier, Director of the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (DMR) Shrimp & Crab Bureau. “We did see the largest group of boats inside of Horn Island.”
Encouraging Local Support
Saucier’s message to the community emphasizes the importance of supporting local shrimpers. “We want to do everything we can to support the industry, so obviously our goal is to get the season open when they’re at market size,” he explained. By purchasing locally caught shrimp, residents can contribute to the vitality of the shrimping industry in Mississippi.
The early reports from day one suggest a promising season ahead for shrimpers on the Mississippi Sound. With decent-sized shrimp being brought back to the docks, there’s hope that the focus on quality will yield positive results for both shrimpers and consumers alike.
