In a recent address at the State Congress tribune, Morena (a major Mexican left-wing political party) deputy Daniel Antonio Cisneros Castro advocated for an immediate cessation of shrimp imports into Mexico, emphasizing the need to protect domestic producers and uphold regulatory standards.
Unfair Competition
Cisneros Castro voiced his solidarity with national aquaculturists, particularly those in Sinaloa, who have faced significant challenges due to unfair competition from imported shrimp, particularly from Ecuador and other Central American nations.
He highlighted the superior quality and adherence to regulations of Mexican shrimp, stressing the detrimental impact of illegal imports on domestic production and the potential introduction of diseases.
Mixed Success and Ongoing Challenges
While celebrating a recent legal victory securing a definitive suspension of shrimp imports, Cisneros Castro expressed dismay at the continued entry of up to 85 percent of shrimp from Central America, primarily from Ecuador, through the Suchiate II customs office.
He called upon the Federal Government to address this issue within the framework of diplomatic relations, urging measures to curtail imports that fail to meet Mexican standards.
Advocating for the Aquaculture Sector
Recognizing the vital role of shrimp aquaculture in supporting thousands of families and generating employment opportunities, Cisneros Castro affirmed Congress’s commitment to addressing this pressing issue.
He underscored his determination to raise awareness of the challenges facing the aquaculture sector and to exert pressure on relevant authorities to safeguard this strategic economic activity.
