The Dutch shrimp fishery has received a prestigious nod from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Belgium, being shortlisted for the ‘Best MSC-Certified Fishery’ award. This accolade is part of the MSC Sustainable Seafood Awards Belgium, an initiative designed to highlight fisheries that excel in environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
The MSC Sustainable Seafood Awards
Since their inception in 2022, the MSC Sustainable Seafood Awards Belgium have been spotlighting organizations that champion sustainability within the fishing sector. With awards spanning nine categories, the MSC evaluates nominees based on their alignment with sustainable seafood principles. The winners are set to be announced on 12 September 2024.
Among this year’s distinguished categories is ‘Best MSC-Certified Fishery,’ where three nominees have made the shortlist: the Dutch mussel fishery, the Icelandic cod fishery, and the Dutch grey shrimp fishery. This recognition underscores the exceptional standards of sustainability maintained by these fisheries.
A Nod to Dutch Shrimp
The Dutch shrimp fishery’s nomination is managed by the Coöperatieve Visserij Organisatie (CVO), representing the Dutch Fishermen’s Association. The CVO is enthusiastic about the nomination, which underscores their dedication to responsible fishing practices.
Amerik Schuitemaker of CVO shared his excitement: “This nomination reflects our commitment to providing consumers with shrimp that are not only locally caught but also produced with the highest sustainability standards. It’s a validation of our efforts and serves as motivation to continue enhancing our practices for a sustainable future in shrimp fishing.”
