Myanmar is poised to achieve significant growth in its aquatic export sector, with expectations to earn USD 805 million this fiscal year. This optimistic projection is supported by anticipated increases in both fish and shrimp exports, according to a recent report from the state-run television channel MRTV, citing Nyunt Win, director of the Department of Fisheries.
Key Export Markets: China and Thailand
Myanmar’s aquatic products, including shrimp, are exported to over 40 countries globally. The primary buyers are China and Thailand, highlighting the strong demand from these neighboring markets. This geographic diversity in export destinations underscores Myanmar’s pivotal role in the international seafood market.
In the fiscal year 2023-24, Myanmar reported substantial earnings from aquatic exports, totaling over USD 720 million. The export volume exceeded 522,000 metric tons of aquatic products, with over 240,000 metric tons transported via air and sea routes. This robust distribution network ensures that Myanmar’s shrimp and other aquatic products reach markets efficiently and reliably.
Breakdown of Aquatic Product Revenue
Aquatic exports from Myanmar are categorized into three main groups: fish, prawns (including shrimp), and other aquatic products. The detailed revenue breakdown for the fiscal year 2023-24 is as follows:
- Fish: Generated over USD 380 million, representing the largest share of the aquatic export revenue.
- Shrimp: Earned over USD 38 million, highlighting the significant contribution of shrimp to the country’s aquatic export portfolio.
- Other Aquatic Products: Contributed over USD 300 million, showcasing the diverse range of aquatic resources that Myanmar exports.
