In April, Norway experienced a notable surge in seafood exports, reaching NOK 13.9 billion (USD 1.29 billion)—a 7% increase compared to the same month last year. Let’s delve into the key highlights and trends observed in Norway’s shrimp exports during this period.
Prawn Export Statistics
Norway exported approximately 1,955 metric tons of prawn valued at NOK 102 million (USD 9.45 million) in April. Although the value saw a decrease of 7% from last year, this period witnessed a significant volume growth of 29%. Notably, Sweden, Canada, and Finland emerged as the largest markets for prawn during this time.
The growth in seafood exports can be largely attributed to the slight weakening of the Norwegian krone against the euro and the US dollar compared to April last year. Additionally, increased export volumes were noted for various species including trout, saithe, haddock, snow crab, and mackerel.
Overall Export Performance
In March and April combined, Norway exported seafood worth NOK 27.6 billion (USD 2.56 billion), showing a decrease of NOK 1.1 billion (USD 101.7 million) compared to the same period last year. Despite this, the year-to-date seafood production value stands at NOK 54.2 billion (USD 5.02 billion), representing a slight decline compared to last year, particularly notable when measured in euros.
Poland, Denmark, and the USA emerged as the top markets for Norwegian seafood exports in April. Poland notably experienced significant value growth, with a 19% increase in export value compared to the previous year.
Prawn Market Dynamics
The prawn market saw varied dynamics. While certain prawn products experienced declines in both volume and price, others, like raw, frozen industrial prawn, exhibited substantial volume growth. Notably, 694 metric tons of raw, frozen industrial prawn were exported in April—a significant increase compared to the previous year.
Insights from the Norwegian Seafood Council
Marte Sofie Danielsen, Head of Shellfish at the Norwegian Seafood Council, highlighted the trends affecting prawn exports. Danielsen noted that certain prawn products experienced price drops, contributing to the overall 7% decrease in prawn value. Additionally, frozen, cooked shell-on prawns saw a decline in volume and price during this period.
Sweden emerged as the largest market for Norwegian seafood in April, showing a 12% value growth. Meanwhile, Denmark experienced the highest growth rate, with an increase of NOK 35 million (USD 3.24 million).
