Buyers in are gradually beginning to arrive at the Public Seafood Market, located in Panama City. Shrimp Ban in Effect
Precisely, the first shrimp ban period began on February 1 and will extend until April 11. During this time, fishing for shrimp is prohibited to allow its reproduction and subsistence, as reported by the Aquatic Resources Authority of Panama (ARAP).
According to ARAP, a total of 100 shrimp boats and about 5,000 artisanal fishermen suspended fishing for the crustacean, since its capture and commercialization are prohibited. However, shrimp production in ponds continues.
Impact on Fishing Practices
One of the fishermen, who asked to remain anonymous, explained that large boats cannot go out, the small boats set sail, which take trips of 1 or 2 days, depending on the place they are going to fish. But its capacity is not for a large number of products, and this is the reason for the shortage.
A pound of prawns is now USD 5.50, shrimp is USD 6.50 and lobster tail is USD 10.00.
