In a proactive move to tackle illegal fishing activities amidst the shrimp ban in Peru, law enforcement agencies have conducted a successful operation in the lower basin of the Majes River. Their efforts resulted in the confiscation of approximately 500 kilograms of shrimp along with 7 fishing nets.
Operation Details
The operation, initiated in the early hours of Friday, February 23, commenced in Corire and extended to several adjacent areas until reaching Pampa Blanca. During the thorough inspection along the banks of the Majes River, authorities detected the presence of shrimp, prompting swift intervention.
Adhering to established protocols, the seized shrimp were promptly released back into the river, while the confiscated fishing nets were destroyed on site. These decisive actions form part of a continuous series of operations aimed at upholding the shrimp ban, currently effective until March 31.
Ongoing Vigilance
Emphasizing the commitment to enforcement, the regional production manager affirmed that such operations will persist until the conclusion of the ban period. Furthermore, he urged the public to adhere to the prohibition, encompassing the fishing, marketing, and consumption of shrimp.
To bolster surveillance efforts during this closed season, the Regional Government of Arequipa had previously accredited volunteer shrimp fishermen. Additionally, a dedicated contact number has been established for lodging complaints and reports pertaining to violations of the shrimp ban.
