In 2023, the Canadian North Shore fishing industry faced a significant setback, marked by a notable 31% decrease in the value of landings. This downturn was primarily attributed to the plummeting prices of snow crab and the diminishing stocks of northern shrimp. Despite the challenges, the fisheries sector managed to generate revenues totaling $50.4 million, based on the landing of 9,300 tonnes of marine products.
A standout in the midst of adversity, lobster landings experienced an increase, providing a silver lining to an otherwise challenging year. Nevertheless, 2023 stands out as the toughest year for North Shore fishermen, witnessing a 13% decline in catches compared to the average of the preceding five years.
Beyond the confines of the North Shore, maritime Quebec witnessed a broader decline in catches, registering a significant 24.2% drop on the markets. This decline reverberated in the overall value of Quebec fisheries, plummeting from $463 million to $351 million within a single year.
