Russian scientists have been diligently monitoring the northern shrimp stock for over two decades, contributing to the sustainability of this valuable fishery resource in Magadan waters. Through collaborative efforts between fish farmers and scientists, Magadan shrimp has garnered recognition as a beloved brand among consumers.
Shift in Shrimp Fishery Trends
In recent years, the primary shrimp fishery activity in the North Sea of Okhotsk fishing subzone has experienced a notable shift to the first half of the year. To adapt to this change, scientists initiated monitoring of the northern shrimp fishery as early as January.
Despite encountering challenging meteorological conditions and extensive ice coverage in the monitoring area, researchers successfully gathered fishing-statistical and biological data. This information is crucial for accurately assessing the current state of the shrimp stock and making informed forecasts for its future dynamics.
Positive Preliminary Forecasts
Preliminary assessments by the research team yield positive insights into the condition of shrimp in northern Magadan waters. January witnessed above-average daily catches of fishing vessels and an overall higher shrimp catch by the fleet compared to long-term averages, indicating a promising outlook for the shrimp population.
The data collected during monitoring activities will play a vital role in formulating forecasts for the total allowable catches (TAC) of shrimp in the northern North Sea of Okhotsk subzone. Additionally, these findings will contribute to the development of recommendations aimed at ensuring the sustainable exploitation of shrimp reserves in the region.
