A major incident unfolded off the southern coast of Labrador, Canada, as the Northern Osprey III, a 260-foot factory freezer shrimp boat, reported taking on water. The distress call was made on Sunday afternoon, prompting a swift response from the Canadian Coast Guard.
The vessel, registered in Halifax, regularly operates in the waters between southern Labrador and Iqaluit. At the time of the distress call, there were thirty crew members on board. The vessel experienced a leak in a valve, located in a hull protrusion about 12 feet below the water’s surface.
Taking immediate action, the crew sought refuge in Porcupine Bay, finding shelter among the islands in this small bay. Walker reported that damage control measures were promptly activated, with additional pumps sent by the Canadian Armed Forces and Coast Guard to address the ingress of water. Since the distress call on Sunday afternoon, the boat has remained stable.
The Coast Guard assured that the crew is in good condition, with regular check-ins every couple of hours. The coordination of efforts from the Canadian Armed Forces and Coast Guard, along with the crew’s proactive measures, has contributed to maintaining stability on the Northern Osprey III.
To further address the situation, divers are scheduled to enter the water on Wednesday with the aim of performing external repairs.
