By August 2024, Ca Mau, a leading province in Vietnam’s seafood export sector, had achieved an export turnover of more than USD 838.7 million. Despite global political and economic instability, including war, natural disasters, and economic downturns, the province is on track to exceed USD 1 billion in export turnover by the end of the year, continuing its long-standing success in seafood exports, particularly shrimp.
Steady Export Growth Despite Global Headwinds
The province’s export sector faced significant challenges in 2024 due to international disruptions. However, Ca Mau has shown resilience, achieving a 7.5% increase in export turnover over the same period last year. Shrimp, one of the province’s primary exports, has been a major contributor to this growth, with the total aquatic product output reaching 432,163 tons in the first eight months of 2024, up 1.4%. This strong performance has positioned Ca Mau to once again surpass USD 1 billion in total export turnover for the year.
In 2024, Ca Mau’s local government has taken decisive steps to support the shrimp industry. The province accelerated public investment disbursement, particularly in key infrastructure projects like transportation, which are critical for improving export logistics. These efforts have created favorable conditions for shrimp producers and exporters to maintain and expand production. The government’s focus on infrastructure development is expected to further enhance the province’s competitiveness in the global shrimp market.
Long-Term Vision for Sustainable Export Growth
Ca Mau’s shrimp industry is not only focused on short-term gains. The provincial government has laid out an ambitious export strategy, aiming for 5-6% annual growth in exports through 2030. By the end of this period, the province hopes to achieve total export turnover of USD 1.73 billion, with shrimp and other aquatic products expected to contribute USD 1.6 billion. This long-term vision emphasizes sustainable practices, digital transformation, and a focus on high-value-added shrimp products that meet international standards.
To ensure continued growth, the People’s Committee of Ca Mau province is implementing several initiatives. These include improving the regulatory environment for businesses, combating illegal and unregulated fishing, and supporting local shrimp farmers with innovative production models. The province is also prioritizing the development of its shrimp processing capacity and branding, ensuring Ca Mau’s shrimp products maintain their leading position in the global seafood market.
